Savonlinna is in the province of Eastern Finland in the region of Etelä Savo (South Savo). Savonlinna's neighbouring municipalities are Enonkoski, Heinävesi, Kerimäki, Kesälahti, Kitee, Liperi, Punkaharju, Rantasalmi, Rääkkylä, Sulkava and Varkaus. Savonranta municipality merged with Savonlinna in 2009.

Savonlinna has a population of 27,585 (1.1.2012), and an area of 1,973 km², 762 km² of which is water (1.1.2010). The population density is 22.79 inhabitants/km². Savonlinna is particularly known for its castle, Olavinlinna, and the Opera Festival held there.
