OPEN INVITATION 13 January 2005
EXHIBITION 24 H 24 Hours is a joint exhibition of visual artists from Iceland and the Finnish province of Southern Savonia in the Regional Museum of Savonlinna on Riihisaari Island in 2005. The idea for the exhibition was born in meetings held by a small group of artists from Southern Savonia during a couple of years. The idea was to awaken co-operation between artists of various fields and create contacts between two countries. Iceland as a country and the artists there interest the artists in our area and thus we have invited Icelandic artists to participate in our exhibition. The exhibition is open to visual artists and designers from Southern Savonia and Iceland. The exhibition is arranged by the Arts Council of Southern Savonia and the Regional Museum of Savonlinna. Co-operation partner for the exhibition is Savonlinna Vocational Institute’s Culture, Arts, Crafts and Design Sector Artemia. About exhibition theme: 24 hours or a calendar day is the period of time that it takes for the sun to be seen again from a certain angle. It is the time that it takes for the stars to reach a certain position again when seen from the Earth. As a concept of time, it includes routines, recurring issues or it may be the morning for rebirth for a person. The calendar day as the theme reveals the reality of being an artist and living in the moment and the space in reality which an artist participating in the exhibition wishes to use. A calendar day can be used as the starting point for an idea, as a qualifier of time or as the physical duration of a piece of work. The artists are in charge of choosing their approach. The curators for the exhibition 24 H are artist and chairperson of the Visual Arts Council Ilkka-Juhani Takalo-Eskola and for design, a member of the Arts Council of Southern Savonia, designer Marja Putus. Accommodation free of charge in Savonlinna has been arranged for the artists participating in the exhibition for the time it takes for them to construct their pieces and for the duration of the opening of the exhibition. In addition, the artists will be able to use working spaces and equipment of the Savonlinna Vocational Institute’s Culture, Arts, Crafts and Design Sector Artemia. The artists will be personally in charge of their travelling costs. Exhibition area: The exhibition will be arranged in Savonlinna Regional Museum in Riihisaari island.
